  • Yakuza vs. Mafia. Who is Deadlier?

Godfather Godfather on the wall… who is the nastiest of them all?

So this is a question I have often pondered to myself many atimes before.

Then lo and behold, I turn on the tv and it was being investigated on Spike tv’s Deadliest Warrior series!

    YAKUZA vs. MAFIA

They had to pick a similar time period from which these organized crime syndicates operated from to make comparisons.

The version of the Yakuza chosen for the Deadliest Warrior death match were from the late 1940s, as Japan was starting to rise from the ashes of World War II.

New York mafia circa 1929, about the time the mafia was getting its real start in New York. Al Capone anyone?

They compared the two mobs in terms of their long range, mid-range, close combat weapons and firearms, and carried out multiple real live demonstrations and ballistic tests —

    E.g. baseball bat vs. nanchuku,
tommy gun vs. British sten gun,
Molotov cocktails vs. ceramic bombs etc…

(the Japanese guy deftly swinging his nanchuku around looked really hot btw ).

It proved to be an interesting, albeit blood splattered and noisy confrontation. With loads of trash talking from each side.

Okay, I admit I love  The Godfather trilogy of movies.

But ultimately I was rallying for my Asian brothers.

Unfortunately in the end, according to the show…. the Mafia won. By a small margin. I could not believe the hypothetical reenactment, the final winning blow was with… an ICEPICK?!

    Pfft.

I felt there was too much comparison on their  “hardware” and not enough on their “software”. The computer simulator could only analyze results based on the strength of their weapons and firearms, hence the mafia had a slight edge in that aspect.

But when you add in the fierce loyalty, intense dedication, code of honor, and sophisticated cunnings of the Yakuza (who also have ancestral ties to the ancient samurai I might add) plus if you STRIP EACH SIDE OF THEIR WEAPONS, who do you think will win? Street brawlers versus the precision and swiftness of martial-arts trained Yakuza who will fight to the death… there’s simply no fight, the Yakuza wins hands down!!!”

don’t mess with Dawn the gangsta

Lets not forget the other criminal underworlds.

What about the Russian mafia (ooh, very ruthless I heard),

apparently they have more men and weapons than the Russian law enforcement.

Former Russian mafia boss Yury holds a photo album charting his time at a drug rehab centre, and the way God had apparently transformed his life.

    and  Chinese triads?

Some 10,000 mobsters from Taiwan and Macau gather for the funeral of triad leader Xu Haiqing in Taiwan on May 25, 2005.

What do you think? Who is deadlier? Who would you hedge your bets on?  :)

  • HI DAWN ! im a huge fan of you and i think ure a rly interesting blogger :D take care in new york!

  • This is pretty interesting, but I don’t like how they glamorize the Yakuza. Did you know that they are heavily involved in child prostitution rings? They traffic young girls from China, the Philippines, etc. who are either unwanted girls, or girls who are tricked into coming and are forced into prostitution and stripping. It is a cruel, cruel business- think if it was your little sister??? They’re also known here in America for smuggling crystal meth. This is not just folklore- it is confirmed over and over. Look up more information on them and you’ll see for yourself. Even just look them up on wikipedia.

The mystery and rituals of the mafia, Yakuza, and other organized crime bodies produce some sort of allure and glamour, but the things they do are extremely inhumane.

  • they should have deadliest blogger: dawn or xiaxue!

  • @SusieQ483 - I think this is just for fun, I mean we all know that the mafia and yakuza are not good… it’s just like those shows where they put shark vs alligator that kinda stuff…

Dawn you look seductive as a yakuza chief hah…

  • Cool… I vote for the italian mafia because I love the Godfather movies!!!

  • I want to join YOUR gang, can?  =)

  • umm…. I bet on the Yakuza…. yea they know martial arts and can kick their ass anytime hehee!

  • Very interesting…I’d probably vote for the Russian Mafia. They do seem a bit more ruthless and scary. We don’t hear too much about the Mafia nowadays anyway.

One group worth mentioning: Latin-American drug lords!! In the US, there’s quite a bit of news coverage about the prolific drug trade/cartels going on in Mexico etc. Columbian drug lords are scary too.

  • GODFATHER

  • Have always enjoyed your blog post.
    keep it up :)

  • The term “yakuza” actually translates to “good for nothing”.  One problem that martial artists run into when confronting a street fighter/assassin such as a Mafia hitman is that the Mafia gunsel has no style at all– he just wants to win.  I have seen many a martial artist, only willing to work within the confines of their style, slam-dunked by the former.  Example: Once upon a time in the U.S. Army I was stationed in Korea, and most of the Korean troops there were very proficient in Tae-Kwon-Do… seventy percent legwork.  Few of them were able to best a U.S. soldier hand to hand in the occasional formal contest or informal disagreement… the U.S. soldier took them off of their feet and grappled them; they couldn’t groundfight as effectively.  Leave them on their feet and let them throw a kick, they can take your head off in an eyeblink.  I think Asian fighters in the old days had a certain inflexibility, with the possible exception of the Ninja.

The Japanese soldier in World War Two had an extreme, albeit different, tactical limitation in this regard too.  They would wrap themselves in battle flags and charge into our machine guns, thinking that “spiritual power” could overcome our firepower.  When our troops heard them singing and getting ready to charge, they loaded up the machine guns and got the Tommy-gunners ready to go.  We destroyed them by the thousands.

As far as dedication and code of honor go, I say a crook is a crook– eastern or western.  But I would bet on the Mafia man, simply because he would be willing to take the effective shortcuts versus the elaborate, narrow approach.

  • I beg to differ. The origin of the term ‘Yakuza’ is widely argued over. The most likely origin is of an ancient gambling game called ‘Ya-Ku-Sa’. In feudal times, more specifically the end of Tokugawa Iieyasu’s Edo period, it was the gambling circuit that was predominant in the organized crime scene.
On many occasions being protected by the local Daimyo and, in effect his retainers (samurai), they pretty much had carte blanche to influence the game any way they desired, often leading to disputes between some more important plebeians and officials. On rare occasions, it led to bloody battles between daimiyo’s retainers and indirectly, they really layed the foundation of what we now perceive to be Yakuza.

Later, in the aftermath of WW2, the slums created by the bombing of Japanese major cities became a breeding ground for gamblers, black market runners and of course murderers. Having been reduced to nothing more than street thugs, the different clans fought for trivial things such as food, clothing and of course, alcohol, cigarettes etc. Many of them were former soldiers of the Imperial Army and, to reduce another misconception about Yakuza, merely had basic martial arts skills, hardly anything worth mentioning. It were the higher ranking officers that more passionately immersed themselves in either Karate, Kendo, Aikido and on very rare occasions a mix of said arts. Mostly people were hacked with axes, swords, happers etc., but the use of firearms was most certainly far from taboo to Yakuza.

It wasn’t until the mid 60s that the Yakuza started to emerge as the more refined, cultured and business savvy mafia we know today, reaping the fruits along with Japan’s explosive industrial market, enabling them to setup fronts, use them to laundr their money and ultimately invest that money into Pachinko Bars, Restaurants, Love Hotels, stripclubs etc., and quite naturally; firearms, recruitment, explosives, drugs, vehicles and anything required to keep their businesses operational.

    So to set things straight:

    - Most Yakuza members have little to no martial arts skills
    - Yakuza will not hesitate for a second to draw a firearm and kill anyone posing a threat to himself, his men, his obun or oyabun.
    - Glamorizing Yakuza, or any other crime organization form any culture, is like glamorizing the army. It is rough, one need a tremendous amount of discipline, there is hardly a fun moment and the job is often tediously long and dull. If something does happen, you would most likely wish you were somewhere else doing the good old 9 to 5. it is organized crime. To think that there is anything honorable about being a criminal of that stature would be immensely ignorant.

So what is the score then?

    I vote for Yakuza. And here are the reasons why;

1 Yakuza are extremely proficient businessmen. Before thinking about slicing and dicing anyone, they consider the financial repercussions. It is all about the money, the mulah, the greenbacks.
Other mafia have the tendency to go vendetta one each other for any random reason, which is the reason for the death toll among other mafia being exponentially larger than that of Yakuza. I believe that this was ultimately the downfall of the Italian mafia in the U.S. back in the days of the Genovese family; they got too cocky, took too many risks and therefore attracted too much attention which led to the infamous FBI crackdown of the lot.
Yakuza will out live any other mafia anywhere in the world simply because their thought pattern are ran by common sense (if you can call it that) and logical reasoning, rather than bloodlust.

2 In the event that Yakuza DOES opt for bloodlust, they have a significant advantage due to the fact that most mafia underestimate them (again cocky). Yakuza are in tremendous numbers, often caused by several families working together in order to achieve a mutual goal. There have been records of thosands of Yakuza streaming into a city to aid another family. They WILL use brute force and they WILL use firearms.

3 The KNOWN financial status of yakuza is merely a tip of the iceberg. In reality, Yakuza have invested in most likely the largest Japanese and, dare i say; probably many American corporations as well. They are extremely wealthy, influential and since WW2 have a great amount of political weight on the world due to Japan’s overwhelming industries. No mafia anywhere can compete with that kind of power.

    So to get some closure;

Yakuza are by far the superior breed of criminals that have reached a level unsurpassed and unequaled by any other mafia in the world. In my opinion; if the Yakuza really wanted to, they could easily get rid of any threat they may encounter. Luckily for us, they seem more interested in financial prosperity. Let’s be honest; vendettas are not good for business after all…

  • i’m the boss too but i get bored now.. so decide to sleep after (si sam gi).. whut da hell??

  • First of all, you’re absolutely stunning o_o, how comes that i never heard of you? Anyway… I usually don’t make such comparisons because Mafia can represent several clans, families etc. (and for mafia i mean Yakuza, Italian mob, triads etc). You have to take into consideration the time, context, situations… you know, all those things. I don’t think you have to look at stuff like guns or hand to hand skills to judge the power of a mob. What really counts is cunning, organization, muscle (in large numbers), racket rings, links, contacts , bounds and all that kind of stuff. Today, the largest clans are the ones from Yakuza. There are some with thousands of members but they ‘re mainly active in Japan, and less world wide. The fact is that in Japan Yakuza is almost legalized lol, they have cards and shit like that, They do a lot of business with the government and help to improve the economy. IN some countries such as Italy or USA mafias are usually very fought, and it’s not like the old times anymore! There are less corrupted people, technology helped a lot too. About Russia… it is a LARGE country, not densely populated, it might seem a stupid observation but it is not. It is easier to hide from Justice, russian economy is not THAT strong (they do have a powerful military and their economy is not weak, but some areas are still poor). So in these situations, it is much easier for a criminal organization to gain control over a territory, run the businesses and shit like that. Don’t forget that’s how Italian mob started. Italy was very poor and a lot of people left the country in seek of fortune, mainly settling themselves into the USA. This happened mainly during the Fascist Italy. Italy has not a huge area, and is densely populated and for a dictatorship it was not that hard to keep control over the population. So… many gangsters were forced to escape.

It was the Italian Mafia who had all the influence over the USA, and today it still does. So i think that the Italian Mafia has always been the “best” form of criminal organization. It’s after all, the Mafia who has ALL the influence on the most powerful nation on earth. (shit , they got FBI, CIA and shit like that, and the five families are still powerful).

  • actually i’m juz hung kwan (boss for red poll and fighter).. My big boss is someone from malaysia and he was boss for eleven country.. our organization were established by yakuza but in our main territory which is south east asia, this organization applying chinese triad ways coz chinese people were majority people joining triad.. so we had to deal with them in all view and very aspect.. another thing, i just lucky found this blog to share something even all things i told were private & confidential.. hahahak

  • italian mafia and russian is more scarier coz they like to kiss mans face and some even go both ways theyll fuck a girl and a guy in the ass, if u like those kinds of shit and there not scary but im scared of guys that likes to kiss man in the face to much and even fuck guys in the ass. so i choose italian and russian mafia to be the scariest of them all

  • Dawn, as short at sweet as you’re lil’ bit of insight into the world of organized crime is, i have to agree with you. What one must realize is that numbers count for much of how the world is today. Take away all the little play things the mafia has (Italian & Russian etc), you realize that the Asians tend to out number them by a fairly large number.

In no way is this comment a dis at those syndicates, but just an observation. China WILL one day take over…and “there goes the neighbourhood…”

    hahahaha Byah!!!

  • haha, a friend just asked me to look at this discussion and, personally, i think you need to clarify the question. What do you mean by deadlier? A meansurement of efficiency or malice/cruelty? Since i am very bored at the moment, allow me to elaborate:

The mafia is, without a doubt, a more sophisticated organization in comparison to the contemporary Yakuza and Triads. Although oriental crime groups are often infamous for their elaborate initiation rites and family structures, contemporary Yakuza and Triads have lost their emphasis on the intricacy and importance of organizational structure and, as a result, are far less dangerous than their predacessors. Nowadays, Yakuza and Triad gangsters are very loosely governed and often form their own street gangs and wage territorial wars against fellow members. They do, however, still have very strong influences in Asia, especially within the golden triangle including Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, etc.

By the way, Yakuza means “8, 9, 3″ which adds up to 20 and is, arguably, the worst hand in a Hanafuda card game. The name can be perceived in many ways including but not limited to meanings such as “social outcasts” and “nonconformity”. Yakuza has a much more refined history compared to Western Mafia and at one point dominated the Japanese society (had their own police force, hospitals, politicians, etc). Irezumi tattoo and missing finger tips are often the most visually distinguishable traits of a Yakuza member. The whole thing with cutting off your own finger tip and presenting it to the Oyabun originated from the old days. You always start with the little finger or the ring finger. Why? Try holding an object without either or both of those fingers and tell me if you still have a firm grip on things. Now imagine a swordsman or gunman without those fingers/finger tips. The inability to firmly and effectively handle a weapon makes an individual more vulnerable and, therefore, more dependent on fellow members of the mafia for protection = you’ll never get out. So if by deadly you mean “crazy” then yes, the Yakuza definitely remains undisputed.

Overall, Western mafia are more influencial on the global market whereas Oriental mafia are strongest within their own territories.

  • Pfff, you aren’t Asian. You look pretty white to me.

  • don’t forget the highly underrated Taliban Mafia… they have almost an exclusive monopoly on drugs and weapons pedaling in most of Asia through Khyber Pass to Karachi port. The Afghan militia, Pakistani army and the American army all have tried to end the smuggling trade but have failed miserably

  • I think that the mafia has more connections then the yukuza and the sheer brutalety of the mafia would conker over the Yukuza. Not only that but the Mafia are the dedliest warriors in the universe so i wouldnt even suggest the yukuza to gpo up agenst them

  • I think that the mafia has more connections then the yukuza and the sheer brutalety of the mafia would conker over the Yukuza. Not only that but the Mafia are the dedliest warriors in the universe so i wouldnt even suggest the yukuza to gpo up agenst them

  • I think you are a wanna be.

  • … Yo quisiera Bailar contigo :D
por lo demás muy Interesante, Los Yakuza ganan con las manos abajo !!!

  • The Russian Mafia is the largest crime syndicate in the world, and they are the most internationalized.  They were born of the relative anarchy in the collapse of the Soviet Union.  Most Russian banks are owned by the Russian Mafia and 80% of businesses pay them protection money.  They are also the most profitable organized crime group globally with profits in the tens of billions of dollars.  And lastly, one fact that MANY people choose to ignore:  the Russian government is extremely corrupt and intertwined in organized crime, therefore they are unwilling to prosecute and imprison most of the mafia’s leadership.  This makes the Russian Mafia, BY FAR, the most powerful and most dangerous organized crime group in the world as they operate in a relative safe haven.

  • North Korean Mafia Two hands down!!!!
25 Million following one god father.

North Korean Mafia State : Outnumber the discipline to kill Russian Mob, Yakuza, Triad all put together.

  • I am so thankful to discover this stuff, i guess this is really enlightening. You can actually locate a matching impression at this point buy viagra
