  • Skyve Elementary Bistro & Bar

Skyve: (verb) To waste time at work or at school, slack off, play hooky.

Which is exactly what my girlfriends and I like to do. Except I prefer to call it “regaining my focus with idyllic talk and good food while a hundred other work matters can wait”.

Things haven’t changed much since my days as a student ;)

Located in the old Monk’s Hill campus, nestled away in a corner of Newton, Skyve’s charming surrounds transport guests to nostalgic, carefree school days. Elements that elevate the quirky vibe include an ala carte menu that is fashioned after a thesis with gibberish on the cover for a cheeky twist. The bar nibbles menu is known as Recess Time and paper placemats resemble worksheets that are filled with mischievous ramblings to entertain guests while waiting for their meals.

An old-school charm also punctuates the interior – think wall dividers with patterns reminiscent of brick tiles from circa 1970s, quaint wooden benches and marble counter tops. Skyve is made up of different spaces to meet various dining needs. There is an alfresco area with benches and a swing for those who prefer a breezy meal, a lounge area with rocking chairs for fun-seekers to unwind, an indoor dining area with mismatched classroom-like chairs and a bar area for those who just want a quick tipple.

Self-described as mod bistro, the food here is a bevy of familiar, comforting flavours prepared with modern culinary techniques by master of sous-vide, Chef Vincent Teng. The all-day dining concept also means that you can pop by anytime, be it for a hearty breakfast, brunch with the family, a casual business lunch, romantic dinner or after work drinks with colleagues as Skyve’s very own walk-in glass wine cellar is home to over 70 labels.

Eggs Benedict. Only 1 egg though!

Was recommended their TEXTURES OF HAZELNUT & CHOCOLATE CAKE. Swoon-worthy.

I was charmed by their numerous witty plays on the “skyve” theme. Menu categories include names such as “The Snoozy Brunch”, “The Sluggish Lunch” and “The Dilly Dally Appetizers”.

Went there another evening, it’s quite nice for a casually romantic date.

    My hot dates :)
