  • Room Makeover Project x Qeeple pt.I

Not many people know this, but I'm quite the homely girl.

Don't get me wrong, I love going out to explore different places and try those hot new dining spots - but I'd much prefer to do so in the evening, or better, in cooler cities. Our sunny, sticky Singapore weather is uncomfortably unpleasant and other than the attraction of their cineplexes, roaming a cookie-cutter air-conditioned mall isn't exactly my favorite cup of tea. We don't even have pretty blue skies to entice me out. If not on holiday, I find myself quite inclined to stay home, have dinner parties and play boardgames with friends - unless of course there's a good reason to go out.

You can call me a vampire of sorts too if you like. I think I'm more productive in the wee hours past midnight, when the world slinks off into a dreamland of oblivion and there is little to distract (I'm a highly distractable, ADD person).

Needless to say, my coffin room is my sanctuary. Since I do a lot of work from home, I often have the leisure of switching between my small office downstairs and my comfortable bedroom upstairs :) I can easily whittle away hours cooped up inside, cell phone on silent. Things that keep me occupied? Work work work, reading, surfing the web, watching shows, quiet time with God... and who can forget those lovely little naps as an orchestra of rain plays outside.

I'm happy staying in. BUT... there is one major thing that I'm not happy about...

I HATE HOW MY ROOM LOOKS.

It hasn't changed since we moved into this house when I was 17! >.<

My parents and the interior designer didn't pay attention to what I wanted then (scoff, what does a nerdy teenager know right?) Light beech wood? I wanted something really dark! Yellow blinds? What happened to my dreamy, long floor-sweeping drapes?! I wanted a low bed frame and um, that's about the only thing they listened to. After that, I spent many years living abroad, returning to Singapore only intermittently. I just never found the right time to re-design my room.

Until now. I'm back for good and ready to make a change!

It's quite embarassing... but I'm going to show you how my ugly room currently looks like.

Plain and spartan. Also notice the obtrusive structural pillar that remains after the space was extended.

NOT ENOUGH STORAGE SPACE!!! I need more shelving and compartments to put away my things.
Tons of stuff from yesteryears that I still keep. I'm very sentimental that way.
Uh oh, notice the old blinds that recently started coming apart.
Also, the lighting is too dim; at night it makes me feel sleepy and I can't see well.

Overflowing wardrobe. This is certainly not enough for a shopaholic and makes looking for items difficult.
I've even hijacked TWO more large cupboards outside for my clothes!
The reason why I take longer to get ready, is because I can't find what to wear haha :)

    Bathroom

My parents built everything in full marble so it'd stand the test of time.

Only fixtures such as the taps, shower head, towel rail, mirrors and cabinetry would be nice to update.

I've always loved browsing and reading interior and architecture publications, tearing pictures out or saving images for my viewing pleasure. So over the past year I started thinking more seriously about the vision and direction for my new room. They say the bedroom reflects a person's personality and tastes, so take a peek into my inner world through some decor I've bookmarked~

In fact, you can view more of my interior inspirations in my qeepbooks (word play on "keep") at qeeple.com/dawnyang

One of my many qeepbooks. Rearrange the pictures, enlarge or downsize them to make however interesting a montage you want

In Qeeple, qeepbooks are similar to folders in Pininterest, where you can browse, keep and organize favorite photos into your own choice of various home categories such as bedroom, bathroom, kitchen etc. Think of them as moodboards to visualize and explain your creative ideas and personal style.

It's super awesome to start your home design journey with Qeeple! The home-grown site has the largest library bank of interior and furnishing ideas in Singapore updated regularly; furthermore there's the added convenience of having the name of the designing firm/supplier provided with each picture. View their portfolio + contact details, get prices and quotes from them on the website itself!

discover inspiring local home lust photos like these

Upload your own sketches, floorplans and showcase images you've collected as well. Choose to share it with others, and help designers you've contacted to get a good idea of your preferences. It's all very interactive and fun!

Through Qeeple, I was matched with a great designer whom I felt had the suitable aesthetic skills to help me turn my sleeping dreams into reality. Joann Ang is the award-awarding director of DDA (Designed Design Associates), check out DDA's Qeeple page.

Joann carefully went through my qeepbooks to understand my tastes and discussed with me my needs. Here are the 3 floor plan options she's come up with:

Please help me select one by telling me which option you think is best? :)

Thanks to Qeeple, I've found excellent contractors listed on their site to work together with DDA on carpentry, wall coatings, laminates, curtains, bathroom and even lighting!

"Alright dream team, let's shake this ghetto hole of a place up"

Incredibly excited to embark on my bedroom makeover project. Come back again for more updates over the next few weeks!

Meantime, wish me luck in packing and moving everything OUT *gasp*

  • Advertorial Review

Ever felt that a fuller bust is beyond reach without painful surgery? Does your life depend on push-up bras?

Maybe your bust lacks volume or has lost firmness. Slimming, menopause, or childbirth might have resulted in a smaller, saggy bust line. And you’re wondering, “What on earth can I do without going under the knife?”

As a lady, I believe most of us desire a shapely, curvaceous figure that brings out our feminine physical qualities. Well, big boobs are not a die-die must have; in fact I believe too large and a girl looks kind of vulgar. That said, it certainly doesn’t hurt to have a bit of nice cleavage to look better in clothes and boost your confidence a little!

The most drastic method to increase your bust size is to get implants or fillers. But it hurts, leaves visible scars, and there are a long list of negative side effects such as cancer, leaking implants, complications during pregnancy etc. Are you SURE you want to risk all that?

I personally prefer a safer, healthier way free from side effects. I don’t want to become an E-cup; I’m looking for natural improvement.

I first tried out natural bust maximizing at Tokyo Bust Express a while ago, and had a truly impressive experience. See here

At Tokyo Bust Express, they believe in harnessing the very best of Japan’s most advanced techniques to help you achieve a better bust line. These include:

    • An extraordinary therapy utilizing organic soybeans extract naturally brimmed with phyto nutrients (phyto-estrogens are plant hormones which are similar to those in our breasts and can act as a supplement/replacement)
    • Massage techniques
    • Special technological equipment

I happily went back again for more treatments!

This time I visited the Novena Square 2 branch.

Cozy Japanese theme with tea and sakura

     They’re award-winning specialists, you’re in good hands.

Personal consultation with Evonne. Glad to see her again!

Evonne is a cheery and helpful professional therapist who takes care in explaining what they do, the science behind their treatments, and making sure they help meet your needs.

She took my measurements and did a bust analysis. Comparing her findings to my results from the previous treatment, she mapped out a personalized plan for me.

That day, I was to try out a seven-step “Bust Maximizing” session.

Sounds very thorough, I couldn’t wait to start!

Entered my room to find a plush pink robe and soft bedroom slippers for me to put on. The robe was scented and smelt amazing! Whenever I come to Tokyo Bust Express, I always feel spoilt like a princess.  They certainly know to create a girly and feminine atmosphere. The soft dim lighting and ambient music put me into a tranquil mood. It’s a very cozy place to relax and unwind.

The bed is heated underneath. Can’t describe how good that feels when you’re lying there for hours!

In a delighted mood - playing around before my therapist came in…. :)

    Starting the treatment....

Can’t show you any photos of course! ;o) But these are the seven bust maximizing treatments I underwent:

    • Collagen scrub
    • Kisei therapy
    • Gel mask (applied with a machine wrap that emitted tingly pulses. (Felt like little fish nibbling, but wasn’t uncomfortable)
    • Okina-C therapy
    • Soya Phyto therapy
(these were administered with blue light and massaging with cold electrode)
    • Cormis gel
    • Suction therapy

Coupled with soothing massages throughout, the treatments help open up the lymphatic nodes around the breast area for healthy maintenance of breast tissues.  They also revitalize and strengthen breast support tissues to enhance the décolleté area.

At the end of it all (and after drifting in and out of dreamy sleep), my breasts felt a lot firmer, rounder and there was a slight visible lifting effect.  I’m usually a large B to small C, and to my satisfaction, I found that I seemed to fit into my C-cup bras much better!

I took back with me a Volume Essence and Bust Up cream to massage on myself everyday since I’ve finished my previous bottles.

Tokyo Bust Express has a whole range of bust care products for customers to use at home daily for a more effective bust maximizing regime.

    Big thank you to Evonne…

…. and big thank you to all the superb staff at Tokyo Bust Express for their attentive service and giving me the wonderful royal treatment!

I’m already looking forward to my next session with them. Because of rumors & gossip, people think my boobs are fake, but they're not. The only help I've had to make them perkier is thanks to Tokyo Bust Express!

If you have realistic expectations and are looking for natural improvements, give Tokyo Bust Express a try.

Kill two birds with one stone - add oomph to your bust line while enjoying a relaxing, pampering time out.

  • Raffles Hotel Presidential Suite

Every cloud has a silver lining

    What a blessing.
My friends (a very sweet couple) were having a weekend staycation at the La Grande Dame De l’Orient and home to the Singapore Sling....

The Raffles Hotel. And they had the presidential suite nonetheless!

With such a sprawling space and just two tiny people to share it, they invited some of us friends over to hang out together with the spirit of Michael Jackson and do some moonwalkin'.

Okay kidding about the MJ part. But it's true that in 1993, the King of Pop once famously stayed here in the very same suite and waved to screaming fans below! A strange feeling of his presence came over me as I thought to myself, "wow he sat where I'm sitting, slept on this very bed..." I guess it's hard to ignore MJ's celebrity connection now that he's gone.

The Sarkies Suite is named in honour of the enterprising Armenian family who established Raffles Hotel in 1887, and ran it until the early thirties of the 20th century.

    Luxury defined

The suite is distinguished by it's amazing spaciousness and elegant appointments, it's magnificence amplified with soaring 14-foot high ceilings. There's a remarkable quality of antiques and artwork displayed, ultra lush period furnishings, grand chandeliers including Oriental carpets arranged on teakwood flooring.

$5000 cognac at the bar. Not for cheap drunks.

The beautiful colonial style is extended to the enormous dining room.

Friends mucking around. It'd be funny to have a candle lit dinner sitting so far apart at opposite ends!

They told me to make a "poor little rich girl" face.

    Found something cool!
The presidential suite has a several doors and deceptively placed exits that guests (or their staff) can discreetly move in and out of secretly!

    Warm splendour of the bedroom.

    Prettier wardrobe than Narnia's

Keeping the old brass knobs for switches add to the rustic touch.

    Gorgeous chinaware

    Flowers are everywhere...

The blooms were all beautifully formed and immaculately arranged. They were so perfect, we thought they were fake at first!

Aha! Discovered their secret.... peek underneath you'll see little hair clips holding them together ;)

Fancy a nice cup of English tea.... where are the scones?

The rest of the hotel also exudes timeless colonial style.

Tiffin Room: The name "Tiffin" originated from India where men went to work with their lunch packed in "tiffin carriers".
The three-tiered container is usually filled with rice or chapatti, a vegetable dish and a curry, prepared by wives or servants.
When the British arrived in Singapore, they adopted the same practice, preferring to eat hygienic, home-cooked meals.
Through the years, tiffin curry has evolved into a lunch spread at the famous Tiffin room.

This bar is a tribute to the numerous writers who have stayed at the hotel or have written about it.

Beautifully restored to its former glory, with French windows overlooking the courtyard,
Raffles Grill captures the true essence of traditional fine dining

    Other charming eateries

Raffles Hotel is reputedly where the sole surviving wild tiger in Singapore was shot and made extinct!
Some stories place this event in the Long Bar. Raffles itself claims the tiger had escaped from enclosure at a nearby "native show" and chased underneath the hotel's Bar & Billiard Room (a raised structure) and shot to death there on August 13, 1902.

    ***

After staying in countless modern hotels after boring modern hotel, this Raffles Hotel suite was a nice change.
A gorgeous ambience coupled with that nostalgic touch elevates the experience to a truly special one. You are magically transported back in time to that golden era of "Old Singapore". Loved it and think I'll be back to dine there again soon.

If you've stayed at other unique/historical hotels, do share! :)

  • Leica Factory Tour in Germany

This is part II of my Leica "das wesentliche" experience in Germany!

Read part I, where I attended the launch of Leica's new range of cameras in Berlin here.

It was a an exciting opportunity to be invited to the Leica factory in Solms, not too far from Frankfurt, to see for myself how the company runs their manufacturing processes, learn about the technology and discover first hand the long heritage behind the brand.

But first, lets check out the town of Wetzlar, where we stayed for one night, and also famously known as the original home of Leica. The Ernst Leitz Company (later to become Leica) began here in the late 1800s and at its peak employed over 7,000 employees.

A great deal of medieval architecture remains in picturesque Wetzlar, evoking the feeling of a fairy tale era. This town is loaded with history, including ancient Roman ruins, medieval trading influences, and has 13th and 14th century fortifications still in place. The supreme court of the Holy Roman Empire was located in the city from 1693 to 1806. Wetzlar is also famous for a great German literary figure — Goethe.

We threaded our way through the steep, winding and almost claustrophobic alleys of the cobble-stoned town center — perched on a hillside. Half timbered houses line the streets, as well as interesting old stone bridges, parks and lakes.

    Ip Man hits up Germany

Never thought I'd ever say this, but what a pretty duck!

Back in the hotel after a nap, we had lunch with the entire crew of Asian media guests together with Leica executives. I was looking forward to my first authentic German meal in a traditional environment.

Mr. Sunil Kaur, MD of Leica Asia Pacific, gives a welcome speech.

Alfred Schopf, CEO of Leica Camera AG.

The time I've been waiting for.... to tuck in!

Tripple of pork. Small grilled knuckles with sauerkraut. Sausages with mashed potatoes.
Pork escalope and asparagus gratinated with sauce Hollandaise.

Yoghurt Rhubarb tartlet with strawberry compote and puff pastry

Leica staff have their names engraved on their cameras. Cool.

I found the coach rides particularly enjoyable, as we passed by gorgeous fields of gold and charming cottages along the way. Life there felt so simple and peaceful, surrounded by blue skies, nature and perfect cool weather.

    Sunset

    Dinner with Beethoven... not.

Represent! Korean x Singaporeans x Thai

For a restaurant named Ludwig's, it came as a surprise that the menu was.... Turkish!

Or maybe not, since Turkish people make up the largest ethnic group in the country after Germans.

Now finally, for the main highlight ladies & gentlemen.... the Leica Factory in Solms!

Marketing Director Cyril Thomas shows his creative chops even when introducing himself

Amazing Leica family tree dispalyed in the lobby. I was blown away!!!

At the turn of the 20th century, the venerable optical factory of Leitz in Wetzlar had been successfully developing world-class microscopes. Working there was an engineer and amateur photographer named Oskar Barnack. He enjoyed exploring the mountains nearby, but to document the scenery he had to lug a box camera and a heavy satchel of glass plates. He was thus spurred to design a pocket-sized device that used modified movie film — the result? The world’s first 35-millimeter still camera.

History before my eyes: The first 35mm small format camera prototypes built in 1913 by Oskar Barnack.
Delayed due to WW1, the first Leica (short combination of Leitz Camera) did not enter series production until 1924 and was introduced to the public in 1925.

The manufacturing facility is not opened to the public, hence it was a real treat for us to get a behind-the-scenes peek! However, during our tour we were not allowed to take photos so I can't show you anything here, sorry :X

But this video will probably explain why, hand-made Leicas and those darn lenses cost that much.

    Some other facts I learnt:

    • Many of their employees have been with the company for decades. A century ago the people living in the area were known for their handicrafts; the tradition and pride of craftsmanship continues today in Leica today.
    • They work in clean room environments that must remain dust free.
    • The entire process of building the M8 and M9 cameras includes roughly 35 people and takes about eight hours per camera.
    • Only around 80 M9s, 10 X2s and 100 S1s can be built daily.
    • Leica Microsystems still produces some of the world's finest microscopes.
    • Another major innovation of Leica was the autofocus, though the technology was sold to Minolta early on.
    • In 2013, they will move back to the original hometown of Wetzlar, in a newer and much larger facility called Lights Park.

Recognize these following iconic photographs in history?

They were all shot with a Leica.

    "How's this for portability?"

I had a fabulously insightful time learning about the past, present and future of not just Leica, but photography. Thank you Leica and thank you God!

Till my next blog post on amazing Berlin....

    Nights x

    Love, Your Dad
    Almighty God

The world is full of people who grew up as orphans, or who feel emotionally so. All humans deep down, are crying out to be unconditionally loved, and sadly many have never fully experienced a true Father's love in wholeness. Today, commonly held belief is that God is an angry, unapproachable and distant being . It really couldn't be further from the truth. When you allow yourself to be embraced by God, you will realize He is what we have been looking for all our lives.

Maybe like me, you've searched for it in other people, your career, material things etc... but I hope like me and so many others, you'll eventually find it in the arms of our maker who loves us like His little children. Safe, secure, cherished; blessed, protected, always cared for. He wants us to know His true heart - not of a punisher, but of a Father.

Go forward and get to know God for who He really is - not who you think He is. He is the Perfect Parent. He always disciplines in love. He is faithful, generous, kind, and He longs to spend time with you. He wants you to receive His love and know that you are a special and unique person to Him. Will you receive God's love and affection? Won't you open up and enter into a relationship with your true Father? He is always patiently waiting for us to come back home. It is my prayer that you will realize His love for you and respond to the father heart of God.

This is what we were created for first and foremost - to love Him and be loved by Him.

So Happy Father's Day everyone! And may all earthly daddies take their lead & example from the best heavenly Dad :)

  • Scoot Off to Sydney

There's a new star in the skies - Scoot is here to save money and offer great value for travelers!

Scoot is a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines (yes best in the world, way to go for my nation). It's a new choose-your-own-frills, LCC (low cost carrier) operating widebody aircraft on medium and long-haul routes.

Their inaugural flight took off for Sydney on 4 June; I was tiptoeing with excitement to be invited to participate in a milestone of aviation history.

Checking in with Class95 FM deejays Vernetta Lopez and Glenn "Egoman" Ong.
They were due to do some broadcasting work for the station live from Sydney.

Scoot's fun and boisterous branding was exemplified with lots of crazy wild orange hair accessories adorning their staff.

And a troupe of dancers to celebrate the special occasion.

    The pioneer cabin crew

Glad I had a rockstar travel buddy for the trip :) Waiting at the gate with Brad

Mr Choi Shing Kwok, Permanent Secretary (Transport) and Scoot's CEO Mr. Campbell Wilson perform the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

We can't wait to board the plane and Scoot to Sydney!

Brightly colored seats in the Boeing 777 aircraft.

    Me x Brad x Catherine x Alvin

Barbarella (Michelle Chong) and Pornsak (Chua Enlai) from hit show "The Noose" were also on board.
They walked around doing a bit of filming and added their touch of comic bedazzlement to starstruck passengers.

Pay only for the meal you want. They looked so good on the menu I wanted them all.

Rent an iPad for SGD$22. Movies, TV shows, music and games at a swipe of your fingers.

Inflight entertainment systems add bulk and increase fuel consumption. iPad rental is the fuel-efficient and environment-friendly way Scoot passes on savings to travelers. With an easy navigation interface and a big, crystal clear screen, I found using the iPad was really not bad at all.

"This Means War", a lasagne meal, too much oreos & milk, and some snooze under my yellow snuggly blanket later....

The inaugural Scoot flight finally touches down on June 5th in the Sydney Airport!

As I gazed out of the window with water streaming down, I thought it was raining. Turns out....

It was a fire truck hosing down the plane as it taxied past the runway! An aviation tradition for first flights apparently.

Congratulations Scoot, here's to bringing more people to experience the fun of Down Under!

Overall, I had a pleasant experience flying with Scoot, in spite of some hiccups with the aircraft that caused long delays and resulted in a few majorly disgruntled passengers. Well, teething problems perhaps, and anyway, safety is a priority no?

Their fleet of Boeing 777s are similar to full-service carriers with wider seats, more leg room, better seat reclining, compared to typical smaller budget aircraft. Much more comfy.

With a name like Scoot, you know you'll be in for what Wilson hopes is a fun and chirpy time complete with and happy, bouncy cabin crew. You might think all the bright yellow sunshine is overkill, or you might love it especially if you're going on a family trip with kids.

Scoot has a unique business model and I'm curious to see how they will fare (pun intended, haha) in time to come. It's certainly in the interest of the consumers that they stay around because they do offer AMAZING value for medium haul flights, and maybe longer flights in the future. Scoot will be adding Taipei and Tokyo to their list of destinations soon in the last quarter of 2012. I think this means I can go back to my favorite Tokyo again and again now! ♥

Check out their incredible Great Singapore Sale fares, I think it's hard to beat this affordability. And remember, scooting goes both ways. So Aussies, Thai and Chinese travelers, you're gonna love these prices too.

  • See You At STAGE

First Bali, now I'm leaving Sydney (check my Twitter and Facebook for some highlights of those trips!) and when I get back home it's pack and immediately off to KL, Malaysia for a shopping and foodie weekend. I almost feel like I'm running the Amazing Race.

On Saturday night 9th June,  I'll also be checking out a new nightspot located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur - STAGE.

Come say hi and party with me at my table! Everyone is welcome and I look forward to meeting all Malaysian readers! :)

    A little about the club.

STAGE, a club concept like no other, promises a wide array of amazing Asian artists from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and Korea, giving you star-studded performances that will leave you in awe and wonderment.

It is curated by UnUsUal Entertainment Singapore, one of Asia’s top concert promoters. I'm sure you must have heard of them as they're the ones who bring artists like Andy Lau, Jacky Cheung, Sammi Cheng, Jay Chou and many more to our regional shores! Its dominance in lighting and audio design, as well as total technical production has taken the company through different paths in the industry, allowing it to organize spectacular events in Stage.
